About Suzanne Elisabeth Jewellery

Suzanne

I am originally from South Africa but now live in London, England. I began designing and making jewellery as a hobby in 2010 and have now grown it into an international business.

Art done with fine detail has been my passion from a young age. I harnessed my creativity by taking art at primary and secondary school where I excelled at painting. I love seeing my intricate designs move from a concept to a tangible piece of art. At university, where I studied Psychology and English Literature, I made beaded jewellery with brilliant colours as a creative outlet alongside my studies.

In 2015 I moved from making beaded jewellery to exploring ceramics. After being given a ceramic pendant as a gift, I decided to try and make one for myself. With the advice from art teachers and email exchanges with many other ceramicists, I began to make ceramic jewellery, learning and gaining experience through trial and error.

Being from South Africa, I draw much of my inspiration from myupbringing in the countryside there. In the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the hills and valleys are rich in natural beauty and scenic views. The colours of the houses and the clothes of the people are bright and bold. The sunrises and sunsets are dramatic, and the summer storms are frequent and intense. The province is home to the Zulu people and so the collection’s names come from the Zulu language. There are four collections of Suzanne Elisabeth Jewellery. Namely, the eGoli, iKhaya, Imbali and Nenhle Collections.

The Angels Care Centre is a charity located where I grew up in South Africa that cares for people in the local community who need it most. They provide education, have a feeding scheme and a crisis centre for the children. Suzanne Elisabeth Jewellery will donate £4 from every sale towards the Centre which will provide food for a child for a week.

The Collections

eGoli means ‘Place of Gold’ and is the name for the pieces of Suzanne’s jewellery that have been decorated with gold lustre. It is also the alternative name for Johannesburg, a vibrant South African city which is know for its gold mines.

iKhaya means ‘Home’. The striking colours of this collection are a reminder of the surrounds and colourful features of Suzanne’s homeland. Many people in the rural lands of Kwa-Zulu Natal paint their houses in bright colours and their washing lines are strung with colourful clothing.

The beautifully sounding word ‘Imbali’ means ‘Flower’. Flowers and leaves are central to Suzanne’s designs. In the Imbali Collection, she uses actual plants to make imprints in the clay.

‘Nenhle’, meaning ‘Elegant’, perfectly describes this collection where the pieces of porcelain jewellery are decorated with metallic lustre.
